William H. Johnson Has Arrived
The U.S. Postal Service has announced the issue of a new floral stamp, a painting by William H. Johnson (1901-1970). Johnson, born in Florence, SC, traveled to Europe, lived in Denmark, and he seemed stylistically to work backward: from realism, to expressionism, to the “folk style” for which he’s best known. While Johnson was not well appreciated in his own lifetime, he’s receiving much greater attention in recent years, notably since Michelle Obama chose four of his paintings for the private quarters of the White House.
Johnson donated most of his life’s work to the Smithsonian Institution.
