‘Watering Status’

USB Vase, from formfjord

Those lost in the leafless wilderness of screens, headsets, cells may also lose an ear for the baby crying, an eye for wilting flowers. So Berlin-based design firm formfjord has created The USB Vase. Plugged into your computer, the device will announce “the watering status” of your tulips or gerberas. A “flower detected icon pops up. ...In case of low water level, a signal will ask the gardener to refill” the vase.
When we saw that formfjord’s “produkt” line also includes a circular indoor ski-track and a giant cutting board covered with sod, to help you “calibrate your own soccer fields,” we got the picture. Yes, we’ve been at the keyboard too long. The USB Vase is satire, another desk accessory to clutter up a so-called life.
We’re intrigued by this new form of marketing: companies selling concept so confidently that they advertise fantasy products and even mock their clientele. Check out formfjord’s other floral product, the “blumenbett” or flowerbed. “Why do flowers always have to stand?” the designers ask. As pictured, this vase permits some white ranunculus to lie down. Lovely.
We need some fresh air.
