Human Flower Project

Stars Fell on South Carolina

Mid-May is magic along the Catawba River in South Carolina. This is when the endangered Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies come into bloom, like the Milky Way fallen to earth. Bill Price who works with the Katawba Valley Land Trust to study and protect this beautiful waterway, sent us this picture of the 2008 display at Landsford Canal State Park. Andrew Lazenby admires one of many hundreds of stands of blooming flowers here, the largest colony of Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies anywhere in the world.

We understand that the City of Columbia, SC, is trying to re-introduce Hymenocallis coronaria into the Broad River and will hold its first Spider Lily Festival this weekend.

James Wandersee and Renee Clary, EarthScholars, have suggested to us the idea of botanical “life lists.” What particular trees, flower displays, or other botanical wonders would you endeavor to see one day? Landsford Canal State Park in late May is on our list! (Thank you, Lindsay Pettus.)
