Escalator Garden

Georgia Silvera Seamans, friend and urban ecologist, spotted this unlikely sunflower “garden” bordering an escalator in Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR). Georgia, visiting Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore late this spring, as always had her eyes out for botanical features, both real and simulated. These identical bunches, decorating a mall inside the metro system, cast a double spell with reflections in the polished stone wall.

As of 2003, Xinhua reported that Hong Kong was the biggest exporter of artificial flowers in the world. We welcome more current information on this interesting topic.

Thank you, Georgia!

Flower Market
The best-smelling street in Hong Kong

Shopping Primer: This is the only market in the city devoted solely to the sale of fresh flowers and other plants.  Good Deals: Orchids and other exotic flowers; roses for HK$15 to 20 (US$2 to 2.60).  The Bottom Line: In a city of offensive odors, you will find the flower-scented air to be a real pleasure.  Combine with a visit to the adjacent Bird Market.  Hours: Open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but go in the morning when the flowers are freshest.  Location: Flower Market Road, Mong Kok District.  Getting There: Prince Edward MTR station, exit B1.  Head east on Prince Edward Road West and turn left on Flower Market Road.

Dear Julie,
Reading this post makes me think whether most of the Chinese are like me, never like to plug a fresh flower.. therefore this plastic flowers are ‘thriving’ so well in Hong Kong etc,. !
However, I do not enjoy any plastic flowers when I can have my wood-rose…
Hong Kong is supposed to be a ‘shoppers’ paradise’ But I did not shop at all when I visited Hong Kong!
No regrets… rather,I visited few beautiful gardens situated in the midst of the city…
I was amazed when I found “ladies slippers” paphiopedilum that is found in Meghalaya (Shillong) India, and the famous Red Vanda (Renanthera Imschootiana) http://nagaland.nic.in/photo/redvanda.jpg
which is found only in the North East of India, Nagaland, bloomed beautifully in Hong Kong garden….. The Datura was in full bloom too along the cable way up to the Victoria Peak…
Lol, my impression of Hong Kong is ‘very romantic ’ due to these flowers and gardens…

Hope Georgia did enjoy her Far East trip…

Best wishes,

Sandy Ao
