Bluebonnets in Heaven
Ben Sargent, the marvelous cartoonist for the Austin American-Statesman, drew this tribute for Lady Bird Johnson last year. A former US first lady and in her later years a busy conservationist, Mrs. Johnson died July 11, 2007. A big part of her legacy is and will be the Wildflower Center she helped to found, located just south of the Texas capitol city. Today, March 16, 2008, we noticed the first big crop of bluebonnets in bloom, on a slope near Interstate 35 by the Woodland exit in South Austin—time to post Ben’s memorial.
